The Exer-Genie® Exerciser was developed in 1962 and has become a staple for physical fitness, rehabilitation & functional training programs for over 40 years. Featured in the Smithsonian Institute, displayed at NASA and in the Astronaut Hall of Fame the Exer-Genie® Exerciser was the first device that allowed the application of multiple concepts of exercise.

Isometrics (static contraction), isokinetics (range of motion exerciser at controlled speed), Variable Resistance, Variable Isotonics and Resistive Aerobics®.

While these methods have been known to exercise professionals for decades, extensive research was not undertaken on either method until the early 1960′s. Then, based on preliminary findings, Isometrics became quite popular, not only among coaches, trainers and athletes, but with the general public looking for an efficient way to get and stay fit.

Isometrics was the simple and quick approach to strength that made this training concept attractive. It was soon discovered, that while rapid strength gains could be made, little was accomplished in the area of endurance and range of motion flexibility.

Isometrics soon took its place in the training room as coaches, trainers and athletes used it with more systems. Isometrics also found its place in the general public as one part of a total fitness program.

More hope was held for ISOKINETICS as the because it allowed for controlled resistance through a specified range of motion. The method maintained a low profile for a number of years because there was not an economical way to implement it. Machines which could provide full range of motion and controlled speed of movement, at the same time, were too expensive for the general public and many institutions to own.

Then, about the time the American Space Program was experimenting with Fitness in Space, a variable resistance rope friction device, originally designed to lower people from a burning building(Sky-Genie® Controlled Descent Device), was adapted to a small exercise machine and named the Exer-Genie® Exerciser.

It was discovered that friction was generated by winding a specially woven nylon rope around a smooth chrome plated metal shaft and pulling on it not only controlled the speed at which the rope moved, but also provided resistance that was proportional to the speed.

The Exer-Genie® provided an economical and efficient way to perform a variety of exercise and training methods.

One of the hybrid methods of isokinetic exercise, is known today as Variable Isokinetic exercise.  In addition, by grasping the trailing end of the line, preventing movement of the rope through the Exer-Genie® Exerciser, one could also implement variable isometric training.

At the time the Exer-Genie® Exerciser was developing, experiments were being conducted by many exercise physiologists throughout the United States and Canada on the application of the Exer-Genie® Exerciser for injury prevention, functional training and functional performance enhancement.

NASA was attracted by the lightweight and small size of the Exer-Genie® Exerciser and decided to put the exercise concept to the test to see if it could provide a valid method for exercising astronauts in micro gravity.

Using the Lockheed Human Performance Laboratory in Sunnyvale, California, NASA scientists put the Exer-Genie® Exerciser and the isometric/variable isokinetic method of exercise through a series of extensive studies.

NASA found the Exer-Genie® Exerciser was not only feasible but was effective in conditioning muscle fiber and maintaining bone mass in micro gravity. In terms of time, space and equipment the Exer-Genie® Exerciser proved to be a more efficient system of exercise than conventional methods. As a result , the Exer-Genie® Exerciser was used in the Apollo Space Program.

The Exer-Genie® Exerciser Fitness & Rehab Training Systems, provided for the first time in the history of exercise a practical, economical, efficient and highly effective way for anyone at any age to get fit and stay fit.

Mental Health First Aid in the USA After One Year

Launching a new program is a bit like eating an elephant. Even though you’ve got a great vision and a huge goal, you still have to tackle it one bite at a time.

That’s the approach that has taken with launching Mental Health First Aid in the United States. We envision Mental Health First Aid becoming as commonplace as CPR and First Aid within the next fifteen years. Some may call that an elephant, but the results of our first program year demonstrate that the challenge is immensely doable especially with a few extra-large bites.

Since its launch last year, more than 300 instructors have been certified in Mental Health First Aid, a program that builds mental health literacy and teaches non-clinicians basic skills in how to help someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. A Mental Health First Aider learns to provide assistance until the problem resolves or until other appropriate help is engaged.

It’s evident that Mental Health First Aid is the right program coming at the right time. When we began this initiative, we were hoping to certify about twenty organizations to introduce Mental Health First Aid in their communities. As of this summer, the end of our official pilot year, we had nearly one hundred fifty organizations offering the program.

The growth of the program has not surprised many of the National Council’s board leaders, who were among the first to adopt Mental Health First Aid. “The multiple wins of the program were obvious from the start,” says Dr. Carl Clark, first vice chair of the National Council Board and CEO of the Mental Health Center of Denver, one of the initial pilot sites. “We can enhance community resilience, offer potential partners an easy-to-understand service, broaden our focus beyond serious mental illness, and further secure our role as community problem solvers.”

Don Miskowiec of North Central Behavioral Health Systems agrees. “Even though we’re dealing with devastating and demanding budget cuts here in Illinois, we are committed to Mental Health First Aid. If anything, it’s even more necessary in our current environment.” After participating in the initial training, Miskowiec’s center added six additional instructors to his team for 2009.

The program focuses on three key elements: recognizing warning signs, increasing skills to help individuals reach out to those with mental health challenges, and understanding how professional and self-help supports can help.

From hospitals and the workplace to college campuses and the general public, Mental Health First Aid addresses not only stigma, but also the real desire to help someone who is struggling. Mental Health First Aid makes it okay to reach out. So often people want to help, but we’re not sure what to do and don’t want to risk doing the ‘wrong’ thing. Mental Health First Aid teaches participants that it’s okay not to have all the answers and increases their comfort level.

To date, the National Council has partnered with the Australian founders as well as the state governments in Maryland and Missouri to ensure that we have a clear, evidence-based and unified Mental Health First Aid curriculum in the United States. In addition, the National Council has created and refined the instructor training program, tracked community engagement, and partnered with the University of Maryland and SAMHSA to evaluate the fidelity of the U.S. program to that of the Australian original. And, the National Council provides ongoing support to MHFA program sites and instructors through individual consultation, a technical assistance website and an instructors listserve. This spring, the national MHFA E-News monthly newsletter was launched to provide updates, share successes, and keep the momentum going.

It’s important that we continue our relationship with the instructors. We’re identifying new ways to share learnings and outcomes from across the country and connecting to common needs, such as supplemental programs and standardized evaluation tools.

Recognizing that the popularity of Mental Health First Aid also increases the need for significant support, capacity and branding, I must emphasize that the National Council is in this for the long haul. The pilot’s success is both fulfilling and a little intimidating. Perhaps a bit like eating an elephant.

Certain Foods Making You Sick? You May Have Food Allergies!

Food allergies may be merely annoying, or they may be life-threatening. About 30,000 Americans rush to emergency rooms every year to receive treatment for serious allergic reactions to foods.  For about 150-200 people, these reactions are fatal. People with food allergies must be careful about what they eat. They also worry about “hidden” allergens that might sneak into their food.

 

What exactly is a food allergy? It’s a specific type of adverse food reaction that involves the immune system.  The body produces an allergic antibody to a food. Then, the next time that food is eaten, the antibody binds with the food and causes an allergic response.

 

Signs and symptoms may develop within minutes or within an hour after eating the offending food.  Here are some of the most common:

• itching, skin rash, hives

• swelling of the lips, face, tongue, throat or other body part

• nasal congestion, wheezing, or difficulty breathing

• abdominal pain  with diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting

• lightheadedness or dizziness

 

These symptoms can become dangerous if any of these responses occur:

• swelling of the throat or air passages that makes it difficult to breathe

• anaphylactic shock (involving a severe drop in blood pressure)

• rapid, irregular pulse

• loss of consciousness

 

How can people with common allergies protect themselves? It helps a lot to read packaging labels carefully.  The FDA requires food manufacturers to list the presence of the most common food allergens on their labels.  These are the 8 foods included in the labeling requirements: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (such as almonds, cashew, and walnuts), fish (such as bass, cod, and flounder), shellfish (such as crab, lobster, and shrimp), soy, and wheat.  If the product contains one of these foods or a protein from one, it must be listed.

 

Any domestic or imported food  regulated by the FDA must supply information such as “contains eggs” on the label. This requirement also includes any of these allergens found in flavorings, colorings, or other additives in that product. If a food may  accidentally come in contact with one of these allergens during the growing, harvesting, or manufacturing process (for example, if peanuts are processed in the same plant), the manufacturer is not required to mention this on the label, but many do list the possibility of trace amounts of a common allergen.   Errors of omission do occur, but, when government inspectors notice that a product contains an unlisted allergen, there is a recall of the product.

 

The government’s labeling requirements do not protect everyone with a food allergy.  The 8 most common offenders listed above account for 90% of all food allergies.  However, more than 160 different foods are known to cause allergic reactions.

 

Here are some interesting and useful facts to know about food allergies:

• Food allergies reflect patterns of consumption.  In Japan, rice is a common allergen.  In Europe, mustard and celery are.

• Food allergy occurs in 6 – 8% of children 4 years old or younger.  In adults, the figure is 3.7%

• Allergies to peanuts and tree nuts are the leading causes of fatal and near-fatal reactions.

• Accidental exposure to allergens occur in about 50% of people with food allergies.

• The most common food allergies in adults are to seafood, peanuts, and tree nuts.

• The most common foods allergies in children are to eggs, milk, and peanuts.

• Adults usually keep their food allergies for their entire lives, but children sometimes outgrow theirs.

• The highly allergic person can become sick from eating even a very tiny amount of a food allergen, for  example, a small piece of a peanut kernel.

• Some allergic food reactions occur only after exercise.

• A positive test for IgE antibodies to a particular food does not necessarily mean that the person will  experience an allergic symptom after eating that food.  In fact, there’s less than a 50% chance that the person actually has that food allergy.

 

Food allergies are different from food intolerance.  Some food ingredients that can make a person sick because of intolerance are histamine, lactose, food additives (such as MSG and sulfites), and  gluten.

 

A health care provider should be consulted for help in diagnosing and treating food allergies. The websites of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have a wealth of information on these topics on diagnosis and treatment of food allergies, but, ultimately, the allergic person’s best source of information is his/her own doctor, who can take a medical history, do an exam, do allergy tests, and consider the patient’s other medical problems before treating the allergy.

 

If you are a person with a history of dangerous allergic reactions, two possibly life-saving recommendations are the following:  1) wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace that states the food allergy you have and possible severe reaction(s) to it; and 2) consult your doctor about the advisability of carrying an auto-injector device containing epinephrine (adrenaline) that you could administer to yourself if necessary.  (You will need a doctor’s prescription for this.)

 

FoodSafety.gov also recommends signing up for allergy alerts by email.  These can let you know about food recalls because of unlisted allergens on product labels.  You can also subscribe to an allergy alert newsfeed.

 

May 9 – 15 was designated Food Allergy Awareness Week.  But, for allergic people and those that cook for them and care for them, awareness must be ongoing every week and every day of the year.

The bariatric diet is what you will follow for the first 2-3 months following your gastric bypass surgery. It is something you will spend time learning about before your surgery and you should have the products in your home before you come home from the hospital. This diet has four stages that last approximately 2 months total, but then what?

The first 2-3 months are going to be very structured and you will be following the gastric bypass diet that was ordered by your dietitian. But this is a very short time in the grand scheme of things. The first six months to a year you will lose weight without trying. You have been blessed with a healthy weight and a changed life, but it will not stay that way if you do not nurture it. If you think that because you have had this surgery that it is impossible for you to gain weight, guess again. Keep those bariatric protein shakes and tennis shoes handy. This is the best advice I can give someone that has lost weight. Exercise regularly and eat meals high in lean protein and low in fat. Eliminate sugar as much as possible. It has no nutritional value and can do a lot to sabotage your efforts at a healthy life. This does not mean you have to give up the things that you love, but you have to learn to set limits. Learning what it takes to be healthy and living by these principles eighty percent of the time will keep your healthy weight.

3 Key Elements to Enjoy Exercise

There are three key elements to any exercise program that should be considered before starting your physical fitness. These elements are safety, effectiveness, and enjoyment. Nine times out of ten people will quit an exercise routine because they do not enjoy what they are doing. Although exercise is not intentionally meant to be enjoyable, if you don’t enjoy what you are doing you won’t get far in achieving your goals. No matter what your goals are with your workout routine, weight loss, muscle gain, or to become fit and healthy, maintaining safety, effectiveness and enjoyment is essential to accomplishing your goals.

When exercising most people have the mindset of “No Pain, No Gain”. Unfortunately, this kind of thinking can lead to injury, set backs and ultimately abandoning your fitness program. It is important to understand the difference between pain and muscle soreness to be able to continue on your path to better health. When you engage in exercise, especially when you first start, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is bound to occur. Muscle soreness is due to weak, unused muscles adapting to the start of exercise or activity. Muscle soreness can occur during activity or after activity and can last any where from 12-48 hours. The intensity and length of muscle soreness is determined by the intensity of the workout and the strength of the muscle. Everyday activities only exert a small amount of force on our muscles. If we don’t use our muscles then they become weak and overtime will atrophy, causing the body to breakdown muscles and use the oxygen and proteins in other areas of the body. Once our muscles get used to exercise muscle soreness will dissipate. However, muscle soreness can reappear at any time during a workout or fitness routine, when you change exercises, or increase time, distance and intensity.

Unlike muscle soreness, pain is a signal from our brain to our body telling us that there is something wrong. Pain signals are normally a sign of injury or trauma within the body. There are two different types of pain that can differentiate where the pain is coming from. Acute or sudden pain suggests injury to the body such as a muscle sprain, or strain. The pain is usually abrupt, specific to a part of the body and varies in intensity. This type of pain is usually associated with swelling, inflammation and bruising. Acute injuries while exercising are usually related to improper form or technique. Never bounce or force movements, whereas this can cause muscle strains or tearing. If you continue exercising after all your energy is depleted your form, accuracy and technique will suffer making injury more likely. If you are unsure of an exercise technique ask a health professional such as a personal trainer.

Delayed pain usually is caused by a deeper, underlying problem such as disease, disorder or condition in the body. Symptoms can range from dull to sharp, achy, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. When experiencing pain symptoms rather than muscle soreness, fatigue or stiffness, it’s important to stop exercising. If the pain subsides, restart exercise with less intensity but be cautious. If pain persists, have a doctor check out the problem.

The effectiveness of ones exercise routine should be based upon ones personal fitness goals. If you are looking to lose weight, low to moderate workouts are the best exercises to burn fat. Every level of exercise has its own exercises, intensity and weight, repetitions and rest periods. Therefore if you have never worked out before or are just returning to exercise after a long break then you need to start out with lower intensity, and weight and higher repetitions and rest periods. As your body adapts to the exercise your muscles will acclimatize and your program will adjust. Make sure your goals match the type of physical activity that you are doing. All effective workout routines have three additional components that maximize the effectiveness of exercise. Warm up, cool down, and stretching are three key elements that not only reduce the risk of injury, but assist the body in achieving the best performance while exercising. The warm up increases the blood flow throughout the body and allows the muscles to prepare for physical activity. Stretched muscles not only increase performance but also improve flexibility, agility and mobility. A proper cool down that includes stretching reduces lactic acid buildup in the muscles, which has been known to cause muscle soreness. In addition, the muscles are able to repair and grow, faster.

Although some people can effectively workout and maintain proper physical fitness without enjoying their fitness routine, for most people if they don’t enjoy what they are doing while working out, they ultimately won’t stick to it. Enjoyment while exercising is possible if someone is motivated and driven by the actual activity, by friends or family, or by the goals they set for themselves. Many people enjoy exercising through the act of exercising itself. Whether you play a sport that you love, or you like to run the act of that type of exercise is a motivator that makes you want to perform that activity. Women, more often than men, prefer to have a companion when working out. When women get together they talk and encourage one another, which helps especially while exercising.  Plus even if they are doing an activity that isn’t particularly enjoyable, the company of a friend gives them enough enjoyment to complete the activity. Setting goals is the biggest motivation for people to want to workout. Whether your goals include losing weight, building muscle or becoming more fit and healthy, setting accomplishable goals can keep you on the right track to achieving your ultimate goal. Through exercise you stay on track to realizing your goals, which is a great feeling. The more motivated you are the more enjoyable your exercise will become.
